New Boulevard in Torino

New Boulevard in Torino

Torino, Italy 1994-2000

The last part of Gregotti Urban Plan for the city of Turin (Gregotti Associati, 1991) was filling the old railroad that used to be at a level beneath the adjacent streets, and to create the “Spina Centrale”, an avenue for the main circulation. The avenue, on the western part of the historic center, connects the Porta Susa station, the cultural district of the Officine Grandi Riparazioni and the new location of the Politecnico creating a major public space where people coming from different locations can meet and enjoy the space. The park, with a lot of trees added to the existing ones, is shaped like boulevard and is reminiscent of the eighteen hundred Turin. According to the original project there were locations along the park where the work of contemporary artists were shown. Today only the Igloo by Mario Merz, the Garden Tree by Giuseppe Penone and the opera by Per Kirkebyfew have been realized.
