Vaalimaa, Finland  2014

Vaalimaa is little town outside of Virolahti in Finland, on the border of Russia. It is located between the two major cities of Helsinki (187 km) and Saint Petersburgh (202 km). With 2 million people crossing the border every year, it is one of the places of commerce between the two countries. And, since it is only 10 km from the ocean this location could became a point of intersection for the navigation routes between Sweden, Finland, Russia and Estonia. The commercial center offers several types of activities for visitors, particularly those coming from Saint Peterburgh. The complex provides a shopping mall, a 152 room hotel, some restaurants and a casino. The building, articulated in two volumes, has a homogeneous surface that can reflect and absorb the light during the day and hasa soft glow during the night. Light accents are on entries, walkways, viewing terraces and all other areas of particular importance for visitors.
